Job Vacancy Announcement: Technician – Telecommunications Fibre Networks in the City of Cape Town, Western Cape

The City of Cape Town is currently offering an exciting job opportunity for the position of Technician – Telecommunications Fibre Networks in the Western Cape region, specifically in Cape Town.

Requirements for the Position:

  1. National Diploma in Network Communications.
  2. Code B or EB driver’s license.
  3. Up to 2 years of relevant post-qualification experience in network communications.
  4. Working knowledge of multiplexer systems, ADSS/OPGW, and heavy-duty fibre optic cables.
  5. Ability to operate sophisticated test and splicing equipment.
  6. High degree of accuracy in operating optic fibre splicing equipment.
  7. A working knowledge of safety regulations and light engineering.

Key Performance Areas Include:

  1. Interpretation and coordination of specific pre-work/site requirements related to installation, repairs, and planned and predictive maintenance sequences, guiding personnel activities.
  2. Completion of internal transactional documentation (e.g., time sheets, log sheets, progress and productivity field reports) and related forms (vehicle checklists).
  3. Performance of specific tasks associated with the operation of specialized vehicles and equipment (compressor, trucks, etc.) during communication equipment and hardware installation, repair, and maintenance activities.
  4. Coordination of activities associated with the construction and installation of communication and fibre optic networks.
  5. Coordination of activities and sequences related to routine maintenance of a multiplexer, multiplexer interface circuits, fibre optic cable systems, and cable networks.
  6. Coordination of activities/sequences related to troubleshooting/fault finding and repairing multiplexers, interface circuits, fibre optic network cables, and copper networks, both underground and overhead.
  7. Coordination of activities/sequences related to safety and procedures in and around high/medium voltage sites and infrastructure.
  8. Performance of administrative tasks for staff to ensure the proper running of the section.
